A little preparation makes writing your Will quick and straightforward. Here's everything you should gather and think about before you start your questionnaire.

Start your Will

Documents to gather

You don't need all of these to start, but having them ready will make the process smoother. Collect what you can before you begin.

Your existing Will

If you already have a Will, have it to hand. We'll use it to check what's changed.

ID and personal details

Your full name, date of birth, address, and nationality.

Property documents

Details of any property you own, how it's owned, and where it's located.

Financial statements

Bank accounts, savings, investments, pensions, and life insurance policies.

Debts and liabilities

Mortgages, loans, and credit cards so your estate picture is complete.

Business and trust documents

If you own a business or have a trust, have the relevant documents ready.

Information you'll need to know

The questionnaire will ask about the following. You don't need exact figures for everything - estimates are fine - but it helps to have thought about these in advance.

Your family

Partner or spouse's full name
Children's full names and dates of birth
Whether any children are under 18
Details of previous marriages or civil partnerships

Executors

1-2 people you trust to carry out your wishes
Their full names and contact details
A backup executor in case your first choice can't act

Guardians

Who should look after your minor children
Their full names
Have a conversation with them first if you can

Beneficiaries

Who should inherit from your estate
How you'd like to split it between them
Any specific gifts (e.g. a ring to a named person)

Your assets

Property you own and how it's held
Bank accounts, savings and investments
Pensions and life insurance
Digital assets (online accounts, photos, crypto)

Your wishes

Funeral or burial preferences
Charities you'd like to support
Any special instructions or messages

Tips for a smooth process

Set aside 30-45 minutes

The questionnaire is thorough but not long. Give yourself uninterrupted time to think through your answers.

Talk to your family first

Discuss your wishes with the people you plan to name as executors, guardians, or beneficiaries before you start.

You can save and return

If you're missing a detail, you can save your progress and come back to it later. You don't have to do it all at once.
